Mencia, Merenzao (Bastardo)
75 cl.
2020
A bright, sparkling red colour. The first nose is a little restrained, but after swirling it reveals lovely fruity, mineral notes that are very faithful to their terroir.
Albariño, Godello, Lado, Loureira, Torrontés, Treixadura
2023
This is one of the historic domains of the Ribeiro region. Located in the Valle de Avia in the beautiful green interior of Galicia. Arsenio Paz was the founder and inspirer of the estate since 1977. In 2022, José Pariente decided to take over this small boutique winery as Arsenio had no successor. This is a small 6ha estate with a good 20,000 bottles of production. José Pariente's main aim is to continue Arsenio's legacy with respect for the region and terroir.
Albariño (100%)
Albarin
Prieto Picudo (100%)
2019
Godello (100%)
2022
Rafael's wine adventure all started with this As Sortes. He wanted to produce one wine, and that's all. And no doubt this wine is at the top of the Valdeorras wines, and white Spanish wines also. "As Sortes" is an old Galician administrative term which refers to a lottery system supposed to avoid too much division of hearted lands. Warning: only 600 bottles are available on the Belgian market!
Mencia
2018
This is only the second time that this cuvée Castro Baroncelli has ever been produced - a 100% Mencia from the highest vines. And one of its greatest wines.
Bastardo (Merenzao), Brancellao (Albarello), Caiño Longo, Carabuñenta, Mencia
2015
A nice blend from the "campo de probas" (the experimentation field) where José Luis Mateo has planted or grafted several old local varieties. This fantastic wine was produced for the first time in 2015.
Alicante Bouchet, Mencia, Merenzao (Bastardo)
This cuvée is the entry level wine of the finca, part of the "vinos elegantes" project by Raúl Perez and Rodri Méndez. The grapes come from 45 to 70 year-old vines, mainly Mencia, but also Alicante and Bastardo. The vines are located in La Chantada, at the Northern tip of the Ribeira Sacra, mainly on granite soils.
Caiño (100%)
Tintorera (100%)
2016
This wine is made from Garnacha Tintorera vines planted in the 1920s. It us quite unique, for this grape is habitually used in blends, mainly for the colour. But José Luis Mateo has decided to use it on its own and makes a wine full of personality out of it, a refined wine with a Rhône character.
Rodri Méndez is one of the best producers of Albariño wines in Galicia. Leirana is his entry level wine, but also the perfect illustration of his style: non frills, crisp, and sharp. Rodri mainly works with older vines, and those are put into good use, in this wine as well as in his top range (the Goliardo line).
This wine was made for the first time in 2017. It is unique, as Rodri is the only one to make a single vineyard wine won this exceptional terroir: a 100 year-old vine planted on 3 metres of sans, 50 metres from the seaside at Arra, in Montalvo-Sanxenxo. Unique indeed.
This is only the second vintage of this cuvée since 2005.
2021
Godello (92%), Treixadura (8%)
Louro is only the second wine of this estate but it illustrates the huge potential of Godello: it is a showcase for minerality and balance. Rafael says that he vinifies the Spanish Grüner Veltliner.
Mencia (80%), Alicante Bouchet (4%), Brancellao (Albarello) (4%), Godello (4%), Caiño (2%), Merenzao (Bastardo) (2%), Mouraton (2%), Palomino (1%), Souson (1%)
150 cl. (Magnum)
This "entry level wine" is really a top wine! Respectful of its terroir, elegant and complex, with a good ageing potentiel. Pazo means estate in the Galician language.
50 cl.
An entry-level wine... and a top wine! Respectful of its terroir, elegant and complex. And with some ageing potential. Pazo means estate in Galician.
2014
This cuvée is only produced in the best vintages. It is not aged in barrels but in stainless steel tanks, on its lees, at low temperatures. This unique wine is only released after 6 years.
Caiño (50%), Souson (50%)
On the steep banks of the Sil river are mainly Mencia vines, but one can also find some old vines of other grapes Merenzao (aka Trousseau), Caïño and Sousón. This Fincas cuvée is a singular blend of Caïño and Sousón (50/50). A wine for adventurers.
Merenzao (Bastardo) (100%)
This Merenzao (also called Bastardo in other regions of Spain, and Trousseau in the Jura), has always been considered as the most refined wine of the estate. It is very original; elegant and light coloured. For those who like finesse.
Sorta Antiga comes from the oldest and the most spectacular of Rafa's vineyards- he names it "the Montrachet of Valdeorras". The parcel is only 0,24 ha. Only bush vines, planted in 1920. The soil is covered with straw, to avoid erosion of the powdery granit. Thos Godello is something apart in Rafa's range. Darker, due to the skin-contact maceration - a tannic white, the orange wine by Rafael Palacios.
Sorte O Soro is Rafael Palacios' first Grand Cru in the Bibei valley in Valdeorras. This is definitely one of Spain's absolute top wines and the nec plus ultra of the Godello. Sourced from one of his best parcels "O Soro", The result in the glass is a tighter Godello in its youth with plenty of fraîche, complexity and structure. Everything the greatest white wine should have in the house is found in this bottle.
The new top wine by Berta Garcia, who made wine at Latour and Haut Brion. The grapes come from within the estate's walls, hence the name of this cuvée, Tras Los Muros, behind the walls.
Mencia (100%)
Raúl Pérez knows like no-one else how to achieve the right balance between finesse and strength. This is no doubt the most elegant of all the reds at Ultreia.
This entry level wine in Raul Perez's range is a tribute to the Camino de Compostela (Ultreia is the salute given to the pilgrims on the way); it is also a very pure expression of the Mencia grape.
This is Raul Pérez's top Bierzo-wine. Named after the old salute of the pilgrims on they way to Santiago de Compostela (Ultreia, go on!) it is a perfect illustration of a pure Mencia. It comes from a 1,1 ha vineyard, planted in 1908, 530m above sea-level?
A single-parcel wine, from a vine located at 500m above sea-level, near Valtuille. Only 1,500 bottles are produced each year.
Verdello Antiguo (100%)
With this wine, José Luis Mateo has accomplished a tour de force and a première, recuperating the Verdello Antiguo, an old clone of Godelllo from the Monterrei heights. This wine has more tension than your usual Godello.
