This is one of the smallest estates in Rias Baixas, but well known from the connoisseurs. Since 2005, the current generation, with Rodri at the helm, has been making super whites but also great reds with a typical Atlantic and Galician accent. Organic cultivation and vinification, minimal intervention. Definitely not wines for beginners.

History Forjas del Salnés

The Méndez family planted Albariño in the village of Meaño in 1912. The one they use for la Finca del Torno dates from this period. in 2005, Rodri Méndez started to work with Raúl Pérez, one of Spain's most famous oenologists. This is when the red wine project really started. With its Goliardo, the estate gained international fame amongst the wine lovers. Today the total production (red and white) is barely 35,000 bottles.

Varieties Forjas del Salnés

Albariño is the white grape on the estate - mainly old vines. For the reds, three (rather unknown) varieties are used: Caíño, Loureiro and Espadeiro. In both colours, the Atlantic character of the wines is obvious.

The vines are located in Meaño, in the Salnés zone, one of the historic components of the Rias Baixas, the heart of the denomination. The vines are very near to the Atlantic, at altitudes under 100 m. The soils are mainly granite, with sand on the surface. These are acidic, deep and permeable soils. The estate is divided into 7 vineyards: El Torno, Xesteira (Albariño), Telleira (Albariño, Caíño, Loureiro, Espadeiro), Ameiró, Xacobeira de Abaixo, Xesteira de Abaixo (Caíño, Loureiro, Espadeiro).

Vinification Forjas del Salnés

Traditional vinification for all the wines - the influence of Raúl Pérez shows. The Leirana is not aged, while the other wines are (in large casks from 700 to 2,500 litres). Only indigenous yeasts are used. Most of the reds are not de-stemmed and macerate in open tanks. Then they are aged for 12 months in old barrels (4 years or more). The winemaking philosophy is thus mostly non-interventionist.

Description

Rodri Méndez is one of the best producers of Albariño wines in Galicia. Leirana is his entry level wine, but also the perfect illustration of his style: non frills, crisp, and sharp. Rodri mainly works with older vines, and those are put into good use, in this wine as well as in his top range (the Goliardo line).

Description

This wine was made for the first time in 2017. It is unique, as Rodri is the only one to make a single vineyard wine won this exceptional terroir: a 100 year-old vine planted on 3 metres of sans, 50 metres from the seaside at Arra, in Montalvo-Sanxenxo. Unique indeed.
