Since 2000, there has been a real revival of the local white grapes, treixadura playing the main rôle.Here this aromatic variety makes nice mineral wines. Other typical grapes are loureira, godello, torrontés and albariño.
Like in Rias Baixas, these grapes grow on granite soils, which ensure a good concentration and a good ageing potentiel to the wines.
The appellation has now some 3,000 hectares under vines, which makes it the largest appellation in Galicia.
In the 1970's and the 1980's, a lot of palomino was planted here, which produced high-yield, mellow and uninteresting wines. A time to forget, even if there are still some Ribeiro palominos on the market.
The region produces also a small volume of original, if not very commercial, reds from caïño, sousón, ferrón, etc.
