Monterrei is the warmest appellation of Galicia, with more Atlantic influences on its western side. Historically, the area was mainly known for its red wines.
It is very rich in old local varietals. Unfortunately, these varietals are threatened by the policy of restructuration and reconversion imposed by the authorities, in order to implement a “more modern” viticulture.
The Monterrei area comprises 3,600 hectares under vines, but only 600 hectares are part of the D.O.
