Product info
This is only the second time that this cuvée Castro Baroncelli has ever been produced - a 100% Mencia from the highest vines. And one of its greatest wines.
Vinification
José Luis Mateo is an adept of the good old ways; he prefers not to desisted the grapes, and uses long macerations/fermentations, with minimal intervention.
The Wien is aged in 500 litre French oak barrels (not new).

Trial analysis
Bright red colour. red fruit and floral notes on the nose. A nice acidity on the palate, juicy tannins, a good linear structure.
This Mencia is quite different from those of El Bierzo - purer and more mineral.

The 2018 Castro Baroncelli is pure Mencía from the top part of the higher part of the Gorvia vineyard, a part of the vineyard that ripens earlier on decomposed slate. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in stainless steel for six months, followed by 12 months in a 500-liter oak barrel. It has 12.64% alcohol and mellow acidity. There is a honeyed touch here, with good ripeness, pure Mencía with less complexity that the old field blends. This is nicely textured with fine tannins, quite linear, with good freshness and balance through integrated acidity.

Wine estate

A modest man, José Luis Mateo is yet considered by many as the only real good winemaker in the Monterrei appellation, and even the best of all Galicia.
He doesn't care about the accolades and scores he gets in the international wine press, working according to what he sees in his vines.
