5 sub-zones are identified:
-along the Miño : Chantada and Ribeiras do Miño.
-along the Sil : Amandi and Ribeiras de Sil.
-along the Bibei, near Valdeorras : Quiroga-Bibei.
In total, 1,300 ha spread amongst 19 communes, in the south of the province of Lugo and in the north of the province of Ourense.
Ribeira Sacra produces mainly red wines, principally from the mencía grape, but also from brancellao, merenzao, sousón, caïño tinto and mouratón. Some whites are alos produced, from godello, treixadura and doña blanca.
Along the Miño, the soils are mainly granite and granitic sands.
Along the Sil, there is more slate.
Naturally, the region being close to the ocean, the climate is Atlantic and rainy.
A challenge indeed for the winegrower!
