On the steep banks of the Sil river are mainly Mencia vines, but one can also find some old vines of other grapes Merenzao (aka Trousseau), Caïño and Sousón.
This Fincas cuvée is a singular blend of Caïño and Sousón (50/50). A wine for adventurers.
Vinification
Foot-treading. Indigenous yeasts.
Whole bunches, no destemming.
The wine is the aged for 11 months in oak barrels (not new).

Trial analysis
Bright red colour. Floral on the nose, at first; then come notes of ripe, red and black fruit, and above all, interesting earth aromas. fragrances.
The first impression on the palate is rather vegetal, but evolves towards richer and riper notes, with a nice volatile acidity.
This wine is certainly not made to please every drinker.

The 2015 Fincas is a 50/50 blend of Caíño and Sousón and is also a blend of two fermentations, one with 20% full clusters in stainless steel and the other with 100% full clusters, foot trodden and in open top 600-liter barrels, both with indigenous yeasts. The wines were blended and matured in 225- and 300-liter oak barrels for 15 months. There is quite a bit of oak here, with a core of ripe but not overripe fruit, showing a mixture of spices, smoke, earth and wild berries. The palate reveals a powerful and generously oaked wine with plenty of fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. It makes me think of the wines from the 1990s. For those who like more oaky reds.

Wine estate

The work of a life time, that of Fernando Gonzalez, who started to recuperate old vines, almost abandoned, some 25 years ago. After rebuilding the walls that protect them from erosion, he started to make wine again with them.
This heroic, extreme cultivation takes place on slopes up to 85%.
Today, Fernando owns 16 hectares on the slopes, more than 40 blocks of vines, mainly planted with red varieties. Raúl Pérez transmitted to him his wine philosophy: wine is made in the vine, with a deep respect for the territory and its identity.

Description

This cuvée is the entry level wine of the finca, part of the "vinos elegantes" project by Raúl Perez and Rodri Méndez. The grapes come from 45 to 70 year-old vines, mainly Mencia, but also Alicante and Bastardo. The vines are located in La Chantada, at the Northern tip of the Ribeira Sacra, mainly on granite soils.

Description

Lousas is the workhorse of Envínate in Galicia. Their "village wine". Besides their top volcanic wines in Tenerife, they also have beautiful vineyards in Ribeira Sacra, located between 400 and 600 m altitude. The Lousas is the Spanish alternative to village wines from Burgundy, which today often cost many times as much as this Spaniard. All vineyards are in biodynamics.

Description

The Cobrana cuvée does not come from Valtuille, like the other wines of the estate, but from 6 parcels around the village of Cobrana, at some 700 metres above sea level. It is a field blend, with some 25% of white grapes - red and white grapes are pressed together. The soils are not sandy like in Valtuille, but made of slate and clay. Whereas the Valtuille wines show a distinctive Rhône-profile, the Cobrana is more similar to a Burgundy wine.
