Pazo Señorans

Description Pazo Señorans

One the nicest estates in the DO Rias Baixas, and one of the best Albariño wines, Pazo de Señorans was instrumental in founding the DO Rias Baixas. Here, the quality level is very high indeed.

Description Pazo Señorans

History Pazo Señorans

The history of this estate is linked to that of its DO, Rias Baixas. Marisol Bueno, its owner, was the founder of this relatively young DO (est. 1988). She also was its president for years. In 1979, Marisol and her husband Javier Mareque bought Pazo de Señorans. The property is located in the Val do Salnes; it is a superb example of the rural Galician architecture. It comprises a pazo, or manor, a small bodega, a “horreo” (a granary on stilts, typical of the region) and even a chapel. Everything dates from the 14th century and is built in big blocks of granite. Here sojourned Manuel II, last king of Portugal, while he was facing dictator Joāo Franco Castelo Branco, at the beginning of the 20th century. When Marisol bought the estate, there were only old vines of Albariño, in dire need of rehabilitation. Today, this Albariño vineyard is one of the most beautiful of Rias Baixas. Year after year, it keeps producing some of the best whites in Spain. Apart from its entry-level wine Pazo de Señorans, the estate makes a real top wine, the Pazo de Señorans Selección de Añada. Some years ago, Vicky Bueno joined her mother at the head of the estate. Their oenologist is also a woman, Ana Quintela.

Varieties Pazo Señorans

Only one grape is used here: Albariño. Galicia’s most famous grape, it has contributed to the success of its wines. Rightly so! For it can yield great results. For quite a long time, Albariño was thought to have come from Germany, brought here by German monks on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in the 12th century. It was event said to belong to the Riesling family. But recent research have proved that it was not so, and that the variety has a local origin. Its berries are small but with a sugar content; what is more, it expresses perfectly the nuances of the Galician terroirs. Albariño is very prone to disease and rot, which can be a challenge in such a humid climate. The pergola can bring a solution because it allows better air circulation; the winds dry the grapes, preventing rot. A crucial factor with Albariño is for the grower to limit its yield per plant, if one aims at getting quality grapes and wines that can age well. A lot of Spaniards still think (wrongly) that wines from the Rias Baixas must be drunk within the year of the bottling. Which may be explained by the fact that some 70% of the wines made there are from low quality, high yield vines (mainly cooperatives' wines) Yet a good Albariño can age very well, like a good Riesling. A good example: Pazo Señorans Selección de Añada, which can age from 10 to 15 years easily. The vineyard around the Pazo is approximately 18.5 hectares. But as the Galician vineyard (and land in general) is very fragmented, the bodega also has contracts with some 150 small winegrowers, for a total of 80 hectares.

Terroir Pazo Señorans

Like many places in Galicia, the soils are 100% granite. The superficial layer is sandy (a decomposition of the granite). This ensures a perfect drainage. When the yield is maintained low, these granite soils give the wines a nice mineral touch. Vines are trained in pergolas, the traditional system in the region, which protects the grapes from the abundant rain.

Vinification Pazo Señorans

The harvest is done by hand – no mechanisation in possible in the pergola system. The yields are kept lower than elsewhere so as to reach a better concentration; it also allows Pazo de Señorans to make wines with a good ageing potential, even if most Spaniards generally drink their Albariño young. An important wine in the range is the Selección de Añada, made with the oldest vines, the ripest grapes and the lowest yields. This wine is aged for 3 years on its lees in stainless steel tanks, at a low temperature. This allows it to develop all its aromas and ensures an ageing potential of (at least) 10 years. The ‘basic’ Pazo de Señorans also ages on its lees.
