History Vetus (Artevino)
Vetus is a wine project by the Anton family. Gonzalo Anton comes from the restaurant business (his father has a Michelin -starred restaurant in Vitoria, the Zaldiaran). And they organise every year a gastronomy convention where the best chefs of the world invite their best clients. Vetus is not their first wine project: first they bought the Izadi estate, in Alava (Rioja Alavesa). Then they invested in the Ribera del Duero, where they purchased the magnificent Finca Villacreces estate, in Quintanillo de Onésimo. Their latest projects were Orben, in the Rioja Alavesa and this small estate in Toro, Vetus. The Antons started to look for an estate in Toro around the year 2003. They found it in Morales de Toro: a property planted with old Tinta de Toro vines, to which they added younger plantations - still Tinta de Toro. A new tiny cellar was built, the modern look of which is in sharp contrast with the rustic landscape of Toro. “Vetus”, the name the Anton gave the estate, means “banned, prohibited”. Because prohibition often generates curiosity, provocation, tension. These dynamics are what the Antons are looking for in their wines. Apart from the Vetus, the estate also produces Flor de Vetus, from its younger vines. These two wines are overflowing with fruit.
