Falset, wich borders the DO Priorat, is Monsant’s little capital.
The region’s development coincided with that of Priorat geographically, surrounds the DO Priorat.
It now hosts more than 90 wineries, whereas there was only one (not counting a few village cooperatives) in the past.
The production is 90% red wine, mainly Grenache and Carignan, complemented by Syrah (a lot of this grape has been planted these last few years), Cabernet and Merlot. The soils are very diverse, often quite stony, from red iron-rich rock to white limestone through poor sandy soils.
The tannins of the Montsant wines are often smoother than in the Priorat and they can generally be consumed sooner, but the great wines of Montsant equal the best of the Priorat.
