History Celler Joan d'Anguera
There is no doubt that this small family estate founded in 1820, was a pioneer for its area. First, for the DO Tarragona; then for Montsant, since 2001 – the year it was officially recognised. Today the 7th generation is at the steering wheel: two brothers, Josep and Joan Anguera, with their mother Mercé. In 1980, their father was the first to plant Syrah in Spain. Soon after that, in 1984, he began to bottle his wine on the estate. Josep worked with old vines of local grapes (Grenache and Carignan) as well as with young vines of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon he had planted. But he was very consistent in his quest for quality. As long as his new vines had not come of age, he sold them as 'vino joven'. Only in 1996 could he produce his first “Finca l’Argatà” and two years later, “El Bugader”. The vines were then 18 years old. Unfortunately, he could not enjoy the fruit of his efforts: he died at the turn of the millennium. With the help of their mother, his two sons took up the challenge of perpetuating this family legacy. At each vintage, they aim at perfection – in the vine as well as in the cellar, always trying to make better wine than the year before. Meanwhile, they have decided to apply the principles of biodynamics. Since 2012, their wines have borne the Demeter certification logo on their label. Josep would surely be very proud of his family today; and justly so.
