History Mas de les Pereres

Dirk Hoet, the owner, is a native of Turnhout, in Belgium. For years he had been looking for a nice estate where he could produce a great wine ; he went searching in the French South-West and in Italy, before he found what he was looking for in Priorat, at Poboleda. Dirk was trained as a veterinary, and in his first life, he produced cider. It took him some years to go from cider to wine, but in 1999, he bought the Mas de les Pereres and rapidly started to test his winemaking abilities. The estate comprises old vines as well as new plantations, all nicely located on slate terraces. Dirk produces white (Nunci Blanc, Nunci Abocat) and red wines (Nuncito, Nunci Negre, Nunci Costero). All these wines are technically perfect; Dirk is a perfectionist and leaves nothing to chance. “Nunci” means village crier – Dirk named some vines to the ex-crier of the village.

Varieties Mas de les Pereres

Dirk uses the varieties with which the winegrowers of the great Priorat revival began: Grenache and Carignan (old vines); he also makes good use of Bordeaux grapes - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even Cabernet Franc, which is unique in Priorat. He also has some Syrah. Dirk’s top wine, the Costero, is 90% Grenache and Carignan (old vines). For his whites, he uses mainly Grenache blanc and Macabeu, and some Muscat for the Abocat.

Terroir Mas de les Pereres

In Poboleda, the soils are made of the typical local slate or “licorella”. These unique soils explain the typical minerality of the Priorat wines. Mas de les Pereres vineyards stand between 350 and 600 m above sea level. This is the highest part of the Priorat. And this means fresher nights, a later harvest and beautiful aromas in the wines. Dirk owns 7 hectares of vines and controls 7 more.

Vinification Mas de les Pereres

Dirk’s whites ferment on their lees. The Nunci Blanc also ferments in oak barrels. For the reds, the winemaking is rather classic, low temperature, remontage and pigeage. A small part of the Syrah is submitted to carbonic maceration. The Nunsweet is a naturally sweet wine, made with grapes dried out in the vines. Mainly Merlot and Grenache. After the harvest, the grapes ferment until there is 45 grams of residual sugar. Then the wine ages for one year in barrels (medium toast or more). Then Dirk blends the wine with his carbonic maceration Syrah, lowering the alcohol from 16 to 15,5%.

Description

All the white grapes of Priorat seem to be present in this blend, even if Grenache Blanc and Macabeu are the most prominent. The others come from a small vineyard nearby. This is one of the owner's favorite wines, and it has already been awarded the tile of "Best Spanish White".

Description

As it is the case for most new style Priorat wines, Dirk uses a base of Grenache-Carignan (minimum 50%), blended with other grapes, mainly from younger vines. Even though it has a Mediterranean touch to it, this wine is very fresh, maybe thanks to the Cabernet Franc, which is quite rare in this zone. The time of ageing in wood is reduced, so as to limit the oaky notes - and it is a success. An outstanding price-quality relation. The name Nunci comme from the fact that Dirk bought his vineyards from the village's cryer - the Nunci.
