Two zones are to be distinguished: Alt Penedès, in the north, with as capitals Vilafranca del Penedès and San Sadurni d'Anoia. This is where the greater part of the wineries are located. The winemaking is focused on Cava, the Spanish counterpart to the French Champagne. The subsoil is often rich, composed of clay, limestone and rocks.
In the south, a little higher in altitude, is the Baix Penedès; it is part of the Province of Tarragone. Its soils are much poorer. As the yields are lower, it is less interesting for Cava.
The trritoriry is nearly as large as the Alt Penedès but the production is much smaller.
