Autòcton Celler is Albert Jané's new "baby". We already know him well, for his Montsant wines of his "Acústic" range. After he put his Priorat estate on the right tracks, Albert came back to his family roots in Lower Penedès, where he makes wines from the local, typical grapes.

Albert Jané set up his new project in Mas Vilella, an estate owned by the Jané family. He sources his indigenous grapes from La Bisbal del Penedès and the Sierra del Montmell and make great 'new classic' wines. Back to his roots indeed!

Varieties Autòcton Celler

The main white grapes he uses are Malvasía de Sitges, Macabeu, Xarello and Xarello Vermell. In red, he uses the very local Sumoll, but also Grenache noir, Carignan, Ull de llebre (aka tempranillo).

Terroir Autòcton Celler

The vineyards are located in the South of Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona. Here the soils are poorer than in Northern Penedès, the average altitude higher, so the density of the vines is lower. At Mas Vilella, the sandy soils lay upon calcareous stone beds, which can cause stress for the plants when the summers are too dry. The vine-roots cannot plunge deeper that 50-60 cm, for they are stopped by the stone layer. So Albert had to call bulldozers to try and eliminate as much stone as he could - 500 truck-loads of stones were carried away! So now the roots can go deeper and the vineyards also enjoy better drainage. These rustic soils are well suited to grapes with a mid-long cycle like Xarello, Malvasia de Sitges and Sumoll.

Vinification Autòcton Celler

Classic vinification. The grapes are selected in the vineyard, then screened at the cellar. Ageing in dolia and barrels (no new oak).
