Like Montilla-Moriles and Jerez, Málaga has known a great viticultural crisis; a lot of producers stopped their activity, leaving the ground to industrial wineries and cooperatives. The real estate speculation made the growers sell their vineyards. Now villas stand where there used to be vines.
Fortunately, a new generation of growers rediscovered the region’s potential.
From times immemorial, people here have been making sweet wines from Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez, in soleras like in Montilla and Jerez.
The new projects in the Axarquía (one of the 5 subzones of the mountainous region of Málaga), are concentrating on making Moscatel wines in a fresher and more modern style.
In 2001, a new appellation was founded, D.O. Sierras de Málaga, fot the dry reds and white wines, the D.O. Málaga being still reserved to sweet wines.
