Varieties Bodegas Bentomiz
The main grape variety, with which everything started, is Moscatel (Muscat d’Alexandrie). Bentomiz has 1.5 ha of this varietal, but also buys grapes from some 24 more hectares around the estate. Up until recently, this Moscatel used to be vinified according to the oxydative method only. At Bentomiz, on the contrary, freshness is the objective, so the reductive method is preferred. And freshness there is in the wine. This grape is widespread in the Málaga region. It has big berries that are also used for table grapes and raisins. This is not the case with the 'Moscatel a grano menudo', with smaller berries – the two are often blended in the wines. Since 2006, Bodegas Bentomiz have been making a red wine from a long-forgotten varietal, the Romé, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot or Tempranillo. Romé is a variety best suited to slope vines and its wines show nice tannines and a good acidity. Bentomiz has 5 hectares of Romé. These are old vines (80 to 100 years), same as for Moscatel vines.
