Description Roura

History Roura

Alella is located just north of Barcelona; it is a small mountainous enclave overlooking the sea. It has a long winegrowing history – Roman documents mention exports from this precise area as far back as 140 BC. The region was then called Hispania Citerior, and Tarragona was its capital. Roura was founded by Juan Antonio Pérez Roura in the mid 80’s. But he launched his first vintages in 1990 (a 1989 white, a 1987 red and a cava). Roura is still one of Alella’s most modern cellars. Nowadays, half of its production is cava.

Varieties Roura

Around 30 ha of vines are dedicated to cava – mainly Pansa Blanca (alias Xarello), part which are trained in goblet, and Chardonnay. For the rosé, Trepat (an old Catalan varietal also to be found in Conca de Barbera) is used. The most recent plantations are trellissed, for a better maturity control of the grapes. As the soils a quite poor, the planting density is low (2,500 plants per hectare). Apart from the Pansa Blanca, Chardonnay is used for the Cavas. The Cava production uses roughly 30 hectares.

Terroir Roura

The estate is located in Val de Rials, a mountainous area just outside of the town of Alella and very near to the sea. Alella is around 90 m above sea level, but Vall de Rials and most of its vines are around 200 to 300 m high. The soils are made of decomposed granite (the “sauló”, as the Catalans call it); this soil is perfect for drainage. What is more, the roots can bore deep into it to find the water they need during dry periods. All the vines are on slopes facing south. The valley has a microclimate: short and mild winters, moderately hot summers, thanks to the sea breeze that cools down the temperatures. As these conditions are very stable, the vintage effect is limited.

Vinification Roura

Harvesting is done by hand but in the cellar, the most modern techniques are used: stainless steel tanks, temperature control, gyropalettes... The cavas are left to mature on their lees for a longer time than the rules of the DO prescribe it: from 12 to 24 months (for the top cuvée).

Roura is the champion of the price quality bubbles. Their style is deliciously vinous, which reflects the 15 months of ageing. The Chardonnay in the blend brings some creaminess.
