D.O. Alella

With less than 300 hectares, this is Catalonia's smallest D.O. It is located a few kilometres to the north of Barcelona.

The landscape is beautiful, but with the extension of Barcelona, the area under vines keeps shrinking. On these lovely hills overlooking the Mediterranean, investors prefer to build houses or offices rather than plant vines. This region has a long history of viticulture, however. The sweet white wine of Maresme (as it was called then) was really popular in the Middle Ages amongst the Barcelona priest.

Description D.O. Alella

Today, there are only three estates left. They produce good wine, mainly cava (obtained with the traditional method).

The specific taste of the wine has much to do with the light coloured subsoil of broken granite or "Sauló", which is very poor in nutrients.
