Prieto Pariente

Description Prieto Pariente

This is the estate of Ignacio and Martina Pariente, son and daughter of Marivi Pariente, from the renowned José Pariente estate in Rueda, which produces one of Spain's most popular and famous white wine. Martina and Ignacio wanted to give a new lease of life to old, forgotten parcels in Castilla-Leon, in red and in white. After years of exploration, that have assembled a nice portfolio of tiny old parcels of vines which produce very expressive wines.

Description Prieto Pariente

History Prieto Pariente

Ignacio and Martina are the 3rd generation of a wine family which started with grandfather José Pariente, after whom their mother's wines are named. After their studies, they decided they wanted more than just follow their mother's footsteps at her estate, but wanted a project of their own; so Prieto Pariente was born in 2012. Since then, the two have been producing wines together, mainly red wines, but also a superb white cuvée.

Varieties Prieto Pariente

For the reds, the estate mainly uses local grapes (Tinto Fino, a variant of Tempranillo) and Grenache. For the white, it makes use of one of the Spain's oldest parcel of Viognier. By chance: Ignacio and Martina though they had bought a parcel of Verdejo but upon closer examination they realised that it was Viognier. That wase the origin of this unique cuvée - a white which cannot be called a Rueda, and is sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon.

Terroir Prieto Pariente

Ignacio's and Martina's wines do not have an appellation but are sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon, which enables them to choose from parcels within the whole of the vast region. Today, the use grapes from 4 villages: -Pedrosa del Rey: Tempranillo and Grenache on sedimentary sands, with some silt and limestone. Parcel planted in 1955, yield: 3,500 kg/ha. -Mucientes: an old parcel of Tempranillo (1941) and some Cabernet Sauvignon from the Valley of Salgüeros (1950). Sand and limestone. Yield: 3,000 kg/ha. -Valbuena de Duero : old vines of Tempranillo (1945), on clay and sand, with some limestone. Yield: 3,000 kg/ha. -La Seca: rugged terroir, lots of limestone, rich in magnesium. Very stony, this parcel has a perfect drainage. Viognier planted in 1999. Yield: 4,500 kg/ha.

Description

One of the few Viogniers from Spain. Although Prieto Pariente is more focused on local varietals, they could not resist making a wine with the high quality grapes of this parcel of Viognier in La Seca (Rueda). The vines were planted in 1999 on a limestone terroir which is rich in magnesium, with good drainage and good exposure to the wind. The yield is 4.5 tonnes per hectare.
