History Mas d'en Gil

Pere Rovira is the patriarch of this magnificent estate. Since he was a child, he has always been attracted by the world of wine. He knows the Spanish vineyards like the back of his hand, because he used to be one of Spain’s most important bulk wine buyers. He also was active in the cava business, in Penedès. But the Priorat, with all that was happening there in the 90’s, captured his attention. When the beautiful Masía Barril was put up for sale, in 1998, he acquired it on behalf of his family. The estate bore the name of its ex-owners, people from Madrid who had bought it in 1931; it was one of the few estates that bottled their wines. Before their arrival, it was called Mas d’en Gil; archives show wine was already made there in the 19th century. The owners of that time were parents of the famous Catalan painter and playwright Santiago Rusiñol, a precursor of the Catalan modernists. After they bought it, the Roviras decided to give it back its original name. In a few years, the estate has been modernised, and above all, the old vines recuperated. In 2000 Rovira also acquired the 40 ha of the neighbouring Finca el Sas. With 125 ha in total, this makes Mas d’En Gil one of the largest and most beautiful estates in the Priorat. In the beginning, Mas d’en Gil was only producing two reds and one white wine. The objective was express the specific terroir of Bellmunt del Priorat – the southernmost and lowest village of the denomination, where a lead mine used to be. What is more, Mas d’en Gil includes a superb arbequina olive orchard, which enables us to propose to you their first class oil production. The Mas also makes its own vinegar. Meanwhile, a second white wine has been added to the first, and a third red as well, only made during the best vintages: Gran Buig. Until now, only two vintages have been made: 1998 and 2004. Mas d’en Gil also produced a sweet wine, the result of many experiments, the Nus – made only in 2007. Proud of their traditions and family roots, Pere’s two daughters, Marta and Pilar Rovira form the ideal team to manage this exceptional estate. Their father can be happy to know that the estate’s future – a lifetime’s achievement - is in good hands.

Varieties Mas d'en Gil

The estate has 45 hectares under vines, which makes it the largest block of old vines in the Priorat. The oldest vines are Grenache país (18 ha), Grenache poilu (9 ha), Carignan (7 ha), Grenache blanc (3 ha) and Macabeu (2 ha). Grenache Poilu or Pelut is a nearly extinct variation of Grenache, easy to identify by the hair (poil) on its leaves. One also finds varieties planted at the end of the 90’s, like Cabernet Sauvignon (4 ha), Syrah (1 ha) and Viognier (0,5 ha). All vineyards are certified organic; the older vines are farmed according to the principles of biodynamics.

Terroir Mas d'en Gil

Mas d’en Gil spreads over 4 valleys, and owing to its size and topography, its soils are very diverse. El Sas is the coldest valley on the estate, with slate and granite soils. Vines are oriented to the east or north-east. La Coma includes 5 successive hills, on which grow terrace vineyards. Some face east, some west. On the highest slopes is the Coma Alta vineyard, on soils of llicorella and granite/slate. These soils are redder than those of eroded llicorella. The Grenache blanc grows in the lowest part of this valley, «La Feixa»; there, soils are made of black slate and clay. La Plana del Mas and Lo Griño : this is the zone which surrounds the farm, the «Masía»; it is planted with olive trees and old Grenache blanc. The soil is made of slate and granite, orientations are very diverse. L’Esmoler: this valley is the most original terrain of the four. Lo Corralot, facing north, is planted with old Macabeu vines, on soils mixing black slates, pebbles and fine quartz. Les Terres Blanques, on the opposite, face east and their sols are a mix of clay and limestone, very stony. Traditionally, here, all vines face east because Grenache does not bear too long an exposure to the sun. So it never faces south. Carignan is planted on the hottest slopes. The estate is located some fifty meters above the village of Bellmunt del Priorat, and enjoys the best natural ventilation in the Priorat: from 3 PM, the humid Garbí wind blows, helping the grapes to ripen with a good balance.

Vinification Mas d'en Gil

As far as possible, the 36 blocks are vinified separately. The 36 wines that are made with them are tasted during the winter; this is when it is decided which red enters the Coma Vella and the Clos Fontà. Only indigenous yeasts are used. Coma Vella always comes mainly from the same 18 blocks (20% are old vines). The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 10 to 20% of which are new. Clos Fontà comes from the 8 best wines – all old vines. It is partially aged in 225 litre oak barrels, and partially in 1,500 litre vats. The white Coma Alta comes from old Grenache blanc and young Viognier grapes. Only 20% of the final blend is aged in barrels. Coma Blanca comes from two 60 year-old blocks of Macabeu and Grenache blanc, harvested at peak maturity, but not dried out. 80% of the wine is aged in 500 litre barrels, the rest in 225 litre barrels. The sweet red wine, the “Nus”, is the result of 9 years of experimentation. It is a unique combination of natural sweet wine, mistelle, straw wine and wine made with dessicated grapes. The ageing lasts around 18 months – in wooden barrels of different sizes.

Coma Calcari is the former Coma Alta that had its name thanks to a higher plot of Viognier that was part of the Coma Alta assemblage until 2013. Coma Calcari is a single vineyard: La Feixa... white Grenache located in a lower zone of the Coma Valley. The vineyard is divided into 2 zones for both viticulture and harvesting. The wine's name refers to the terroir which is mainly chalk with some clay. A style that shows the sensitive side of Grenache. Its terroir and location give the wine extra energy, extra acidity and extra finesse! An average of 3500 bottles are made of this stylish white Grenache.

Mas d'En Gil is an outstanding wine estate, whose old vines produce top cuvées; but it also hosts some 2,000 old Arbequina olive-trees. This does not mean a huge oil production, but the quality is superb. The olive grove lies in the Siurana appellation, which is roughly the same area as the DO Priorat for wine. This oil is extra virgin and unfiltered.
