History Buil i Giné

Spurred by the success of the “New Priorat Forefathers” like Costers del Siurana, Xavi Buil started making wine when he was still a young man. In 1996, he associated himself with the Gratallops cooperative. 1997 was his first vintage; he launched it the year after. Viticulture was in his genes: his grandfather and his great-grandfather had vines and made their own wine, like many in the region. Xavi’s grandfather had even been elected twice President of the Falset cooperative. From the very beginning, his philosophy was very clear: make wines with local varieties, i.e. Grenache and Carignan; quality and accessible wines. Xavi never had the intention of making the best wines in Priorat. Theses wines already existed. His ambition was to make nice, honest and unpretentious wines, but with a great value for money. At Buil i Giné, the wines may not be very complex, but they are made in accordance to the region’s tradition… and they are made to be drunk. Meanwhile, Xavi had a new cellar built on the road from Gratallops to La Vilella Baixa, in association with Rueda producer Avelino Vegas, who shares his philosophy. Xavi now can also sell Avenino’s wine. Xavi’s wife Anna sells typical food products; with her brand Priorat Natur, she has revamped the traditional products of the region; together, they make a superb vermouth, following an old local recipe.

Varieties Buil i Giné

Right from the start, the Giné Giné blend (which bears Xavi’s grandfather family names as a tribute) has been made with Priorat’s typical varieties: Carignan and Grenache. Since then, Xavi has planted other varieties to make rosé and white. The Ginés own 24 hectares of vines, control 23 more hectares and can process the grapes of 20 more hectares in association with other growers. Varietals on the estate are as follows: Carignan (13.5 hectares), Grenache (11.5 hectares), Grenache blanc (2 hectares), Macabeu (1 hectare), Merlot (6 hectares), Cabernet Sauvignon (8 hectares), Syrah (4 hectares) and Viognier (1.5 hectare). Xavi cultivates his vine as his grandfather used to, i.e. without any systemic chemical (except in years 1999 and 2002, when the conditions were very difficult).

Terroir Buil i Giné

The vineyards are located in Gratallops, in the heart of the DO Priorat. The soils are 100% llicorella, the typical slate of Priorat, dating from the pleistocene era (1.8 million years to 10.000 years ago). Most vineyards face west or north. For two good reasons: first, better oriented slates prevent erosion; second, the vines benefit from the dry Séré wind which protects them from fungi. Add the other local wind, the cooler and more humid Garbinada, coming from the Mediterranean, and you get excellent ripening conditions and an optimal balance.

Vinification Buil i Giné

For Xavi, the quality of the wine essentially comes from the vines. He looks after them with great care. Getting the optimal ripeness is the result of years of experience, the sum of lots of little details. The winemaking process is traditional, with controlled temperature. Each vine block is vinified separately. The ageing process takes place in wooden barrels of 300 and 500 litres.
