From 1988 to 2015, enologist Xavier Ausàs worked at Vega Sicilia. In 2016, he made his first wine under his own name: Ausàs Interpretación, which soon reached the status of cult wine in the Ribera del Duero!

History Xavier Ausàs

A Catalan born in Figueras in 1968, Xavier spent most of his career in Ribera del Duero, where he was hired as enologist by the famous Vega Sicilia, in 1988. First under the wing of Marciano Garcia, then from 1998, as technical director, supervising all the wine projects of the group. In 2015, Xavier and Vega Sicila decide to go their separate ways, and Xavier starts up his own project. Thanks to his experience, he knew where to find best quality tempranillo. To make a great wine, everything starts in the vineyard - and especially with choosing old vines of good terroirs with the best exposition, often at the higher altitudes. And Xavier had the right contact to source these quality grapes. Xavier's bodega is located in Quintanillo de Onésimo and its production is around 24,000 bottles per year only.

Varieties Xavier Ausàs

Tempranillo, or as it is called here, where it is the main grape, Tinto Fino. Xavier only uses older vines (40+) from the best, higher terroirs (900 metres).

Terroir Xavier Ausàs

Its name says it all: this is Xavier Ausàs's interpretation of Tempranillo and Ribera del Duero. He sources the grapes from growers located in various villages, with whom he was already in contact when he sourced the grapes for Alión The soils here are either clay or limestone, some stony and others less.

Vinification Xavier Ausàs

The grapes are fermented is stainless steel or cement tanks, with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged for 16 months, partly in barriques, partly in 500-litre casks (a maximum of 40% are new wood).
