Torre de Barreda

Description Torre de Barreda

The good Cencibel from the Toledo hills. This was a farm before it became a wine producer. The good potential of the old vines (and new plantings as well) induced the owners to produce their own wine, which they started in 1999.

Description Torre de Barreda

History Torre de Barreda

Wine has been made at this estate since the 17th century. The numerous tinajas (big stoneware amphoras) that are still present, are the perfect illustration of this viticultural past. It was also the first cellar in the Toledo province to have registered for the D.O. The vines and the bodega are located in Corral de Almaguer. The renovation of the estate was started by Juan de la Barreda’s father (new tanks, barrels, modernisation of the cellar and its winemaking machinery). La Mancha is mainly known for its numerous cooperatives and their mass production of white Airén. But at Torre de Barreda, the emphasis is on the red Cencibel (aka Tempranillo), even if it was only planted here in the 90’s. In 1999, the first Torre de Barreda was launched; that same year, the new generation Juan junior, joined the firm. Juan’s wines are light-years away from most of those that are made in this region: they are overflowing with fruit, colour and juicy tannins. Consultant oenologist Ignacio de Miguel, who controls the proceedings at the cellar and in the vine, can get credit for this. The wines do not bear the D.O. La Mancha, although they are entitled to it, but the mention Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla. This area is that of the “Montes de Toledo” Olive Oil D.O., but this D.O. does not exist for wines yet. In short this estate stands out for its superb wines and its incredible good value for money.

Varieties Torre de Barreda

The estate spreads over 170 hectares in total, of which 80 hectares are under vines. The main grape is Tempranillo, also called Cencibel locally. But Torre de Barreda prefers to keep the name Tempranillo so as not to be confused with the kind of “typical” Cencibels of La Mancha. Torre de Barreda owns 56 hectares of Tempranillo, half of which are rather old goblet vines (between 40 and 70 years old). The new plantations are trellissed. In 1995-96, 8 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and 16 hectares of Syrah were planted on the estate. Juan now makes a monovariety wine with the Syrah.

Terroir Torre de Barreda

Mainly sandy soils with some limestone patches. The soil is shallow and poor in organic elements. The climate is continental with harsh winters and very hot summers.

Vinification Torre de Barreda

Maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The malolactic fermentation takes place in the old - restored – tinajas. Then the wines are aged in French and American oak barrels, which are renewed every 3 years.

Description

This "Friends' wine" is the flagship of this family bodega, located in Corral de Almaguer. It coiuld be sold under the La Mancha denomination, but owner Juan de la Barreda prefers to use the Tierra de Castilla label. The wine is a blend of old Tempranillo grapes (here they call it Cencibel), from three different terroirs: La Desehilla, Monte Alto and El Convento, with some shiraz and cabernet from younger vines.

Description

Airen is the world's most planted varietal, but hardly no one has eve heard about it. The whole of La Mancha is planted with it, but rare are the interesting wines made with it. The quality of this wine is all the more impressive!

Torre de Barreda stand for an outstanding price-quality relation. Although Cabernet Sauvignon is now very common in the world of wine, it is a rarity on this estate - the production of this cuvée never exceeds 10,000 bottles.

Description

In 2015, the estate planted 4,5 ha of Graciano. The aim was to make a wine with a moderate level of alcohol and a good acidity. Graciano comes from the North of Spain, where it is often blended with Tempranillo to which its brings its acidity. In a hot region like Toledo, it keeps its freshness while reaching an excellent ripeness.
