History Solar de Urbezo
Santiago Gracia’s roots are in Cariñena. His family owned vines there and when he was a child, already he worked there. The whole production was sold to the cooperative, as was common in those days. Once he was trained as an oenologist, he continued to do so. He even became the president of the largest cooperative in the DO, San Valero. But in 1995, seeing that the cooperative could not modernise its equipment fast enough, he decided to leave and found his own estate. Then, he already owned 100 hectares of vines. The name of the estate, “Solar de Urbezo”, comes from Antonio Urbezo, a Cariñena painter, who had made a portrait of Santiago’s mother. His paintings also inspired the estate’s labels. Santiago was a pioneer in Cariñena. A lot of small estates followed his example and chose the path to modernity. He wants to produce only wines of quality; fruity wines that are true to their region’s character and traditions.
