As its name indicates, this is the cradle of the Carignan grape (Cariñena, in Spanish). However, it is now rare in the area, the main varietal here being Grenache Noir. However, since the 90’s, the D.O. has been experiencing a revival and new grapes have been planted.
The image of the DO has not always been very positive in Spain, for it has long produced rough, rustic and alcoholic wines. Today it is improving, on par with the quality of the production.
The wines are still quite powerful, but they are now fruity and well made, thanks to modern technology.
Vineyards are on highlands (400 m above sea level) or on hills, bordering the D.O. Calatayud, up to 800 m. Soils are brownish, stony and poor – pebbles, schist and calcium carbonate.
