Another small project of Raúl Pérez, an enologist and a globe-trotter, with his nephew César Márquez. Their ambition is to produce terroir wines in the respect of the local traditions of Valtuille de Abajo.

History La Vizcaína (Raúl Pérez)

Raul Pérez is one of Spain's most famous enologists. Born in Valtuille, he has put his region (El Bierzo) back on the wine map, thanks to the wines he made first at the family estate of Castro Ventosa, then at other estates in Bierzo and Galicia. At La Vizcaina, the cuvées are usually produced in very small quantities, from small micro-terroirs, and often bear the names of their parcel. The project started in 2011, and as Raúl is quite busy with his Galician activities, here, he works with his nephew Cesar.

Varieties La Vizcaína (Raúl Pérez)

Here, Mencía is the main grape, but there is also a parcel of Doña Blanca for the whites. And as they are old field blend vines, the Mencía vines often contain other local grapes - from 5 to 8% of Sousón, Bastardo or Alicante Bouchet.

Terroir La Vizcaína (Raúl Pérez)

The soils around Valtuille de Abajo are mainly limestone and clay. They are poor soils. All the parcels are located on the slopes of the old Roman fortress or Castro, hence the name 'lomas de Valtuille'. In some spots, one will also find a mix of sand and slate.

Vinification La Vizcaína (Raúl Pérez)

The harvest is done by hand in small baskets. The winemaking is traditional. The grapes are not de-stemmed, they macerate and ferment in open barrels. Then the wines are aged for some 12 months in French oak barrels.
