José Gil

Description José Gil

Named "Young Winemaker of the Year" in 2021, José is one of Spain's most promising winemakers. And as he works in a quite classical appellation, La Rioja, his "Burgundian" approach to wine is certainly innovative. Their main models being Abel Mendoza and the Artuke brothers, Kosé and his partner Vicky know the perfect way to follow. Here, Tempranillo shows itself in its most elegant and refined profile.

Description José Gil

History José Gil

José Gil's family owns a small wine estate in San Vincente de la Sonsierra (Olmaza). There he grew up and found his winemaking style, with the inspiration of the new generation of Spanish winemakers like Artadi, Abel Mendoza, Contador, Remirez de Ganuza and Artuke. After a stay in Burgundy, where he caught the Burgundy-virus, he decided to go and work solo with some plots of vine he owns, in the company of his partner Vicky. 2016, their first vintage, was immediately hailed as a great success by the wine critics who wrote about the small estate as 'the next big thing in Rioja'. Their production is still very limited (6,500 bottles). Today, José & Vicky produce one 'village-wine' and four crus (600 bottles each). Their wines are aged in an old 'calado', the traditional name given to the underground cellars delved in the stone, near San Vicente. Everything is done very naturally, with a minimum of intervention.

Varieties José Gil

José and Vicky work with field-blends where Tempranillo is the main grape. The vines in some parcels are 100 to 130 years-old! Apart from Tempranillo, the blends incorporate Grenache Noir and also some white grapes which are generally planted in the corners of each block (Viura, White Grenache and Palomino, mainly).

Terroir José Gil

The vineyards are mainly located is San Vicente de la Sonsierra, although one cru, El Fugas, lies in Briones. All these vineyards lay between 500 and 610 m above the sea level. Each cru has its own type of soil. Marl and limestone in La Canoca. Limestone in El Bardallo. Clay, small stones and granite in El Fugas. Sand and sandstone in Camino de Ribas (La Concava).

Vinification José Gil

The harvest is always done by hand, the grapes being completely de-stemmed or not according to the vintage (in 2020, they were). The wines are aged for some 10 months in old 500 litre-casks of French oak, within the old 'calado' delved in a hill slope.
