Javi Revert Viticultor

Description Javi Revert Viticultor

Javi Revert is a young oenologist who works with Pablo Calatayud at Celler del Roure, in Valencia. In 2014, the founded his own estate, inspired by the vineyards planted with local varieties by his grandfather and great-grandfather. All his parcels are located around his native village of La Font de la Figuera (Terres dels Alforins, in the province of Valence); they are high-altitude old vines (700-800 m above sea level) planted in field blend, between olive groves, almond trees and woods. A project which brings him back to his family roots.

History Javi Revert Viticultor

After his studies in bio-engineering in Valence, Javi made his internship at Celler del Roure in Moixent, very close to his native Font de la Figuera. His grandparents on both sides of his family used to be winegrowers and still owned some parcels of old vines planted with ancient of unknown varieties. Just what Javi was looking for! In 2014, he found by chance a parcel planted by his grandfather in 1948, then some old, abandoned terraces which he decided to rehabilitate. Javi likes high altitude vines, facing north and on light soils. He produced his first wines in 2016, these reflecting perfectly his philosophy.

Varieties Javi Revert Viticultor

Javi only uses local Mediterranean varietals whose origin is often lost but who were abundant in the region before phylloxera. Javi is always looking for new ones and often finds small parcels thanks to old winegrowers or friends. These vines have often been invaded by the surrounding vegetation. As regards the whites, he uses the Merseguera, now better known, but also Verdil and Malvasia. In our portfolio, we have also added his Tortosi and his Trepadell. As regards the reds, he mainly uses the local Monastrell and Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha tintorera). But his top red cuvée, the Simeta, is made with Arcos, a Valencian grape not often found elsewhere, with a long maturation cycle, a thick skin and large berries. According to ampelographic studies, Arcos is part of the Moristel family, from Aragon.

Terroir Javi Revert Viticultor

The Terres dels Alforins comprise Moixent, La Font de la Figuera and Fontanars dels Alforins. They are part of the sub-zone Clarión, the mountainous hinterland of the Valencia DO. At 700 or 800 m above sea level, the surface soils are often as white as albariza. As these vines have often been invaded by the vegetation, a sort of symbiosis was created with olive trees, almond trees and all sort of Mediterranean trees and bushes. Javi is looking for fresh microclimates, vines often facing north in this warm region. The vines must mirror the kind of fresh wines he has in mind. The white varieties and part of the red varieties have been recuperated on the flanks of the Penya Forada, on white, stony and dry soils, often abandoned for more than 100 years.

Vinification Javi Revert Viticultor

Javi works 100% organically. He only used indigenous yeast for fermentation. The white Micalet and the red Sensal are fermented in oak barrels, without temperature control. They are then aged for 8 and 10 months, respectively. Part of the red grapes are not de-stemmed. Part of the white cuvée is aged on its lees in demijohns, also for 8 months. The top red cuvée, the Simeta, is aged in earthen jars and demijohns for 10 months.

Description

Javi Revert is particularly proud of the Simeta cuvée. It is his flagship wine in red. This wine is made on a small parcel of Arcos grape - a varietal he has saved. This vine was planted in the 1970's on the flanks of the the Penya Foradà, at Tossa de l'Agel (650m above sea-level), on sandy soils. This is Javi's most Mediterranean wine, taking advantage of the warmth of long summer days which suits this variety. Only 1007 bottles of this wine were produced.
