Cote

Description Cote

'Cote' is someone special. A living encyclopedia of the Ribera del Duero, his CV as an enologist is impressive. With such a baggage, he decided to create his own small bodega in 2018, to which he gave his own surname, Cote. He works with old vines mainly ungrafted, according to the lunar calendar.

Description Cote

History Cote

Cote has been working in the Ribera for ages, having made wine at the most famous wineries (Vega Sicilia, Pingus, Mauro, San Francisco...) before deciding to make his own according to his own personal philosophy, in 2018. 2019 is the first vintage he has been launching on the export markets. A new bodega with real potential.

Varieties Cote

Cote is working with vines in 5 different places in Castilla-Leon, so not only with Tempranillo (aka Tinto Fino). Like his mentor Mauro, he's decided to declare his wines as Vinos de la Tierra, not Ribera del Deuro, which gives him more freedom. So he uses Tempranillo in Valtiendas, Zamora and Cigales, but also Aragonés in Burgos and Petit Verdot and Grenache in Toro. All his vineyards are small parcels of old vines (70 to 100 years-old), mostly ungrafted. And the yields are extremely low.

Terroir Cote

The 5 terroirs Cote has selected represent for him the essence of Castille-Leon. They are: 1. Baños de Valdearados in Ribera del Duero (Burgos), 8.3 ha, mainly ungrafted Aragonés planted in 1908 and 1948. At 970m above sea-level, on clay and silt and lime. 2. Caserio de San José in Valtiendas (Segovia), 3 ha, mainly ungrafted Tempranillo planted in 1956 at 880 m above sea level, on stony and alluvial soils. 3. San Roman de Hornija in Toro (Zamora), 6,4 ha, ungrafted Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Grenache, planted between 1930 and 1940, at 720m don sandy soils covered with pebbles. 4. Trigueros del Vale in Cigales (Valladolid), 2.5 ha, Tempranillo on American rootstock (110R) planted between 1935 and 1950 at 780 metres above sea-level, on sandy and alluvial soils of clay. 5. Gumiel del Mercado in Ribera del Duero (Burgos), 2 ha, Tempranillo planted in 1998 on 41B rootstock, at 920 metres, on silt and clay with pebbles.

Vinification Cote

All vineyards are farmed according biodynamics (and Cote also respects the lunar calendar for winemaking and ageing). The grapes are harvested in small baskets, then macerated and fermented in concrete tanks with temperature control. The malolactic fermentation takes place in Lunessence Burgundian barrels. 12 to 16 months of ageing with bâtonnage. No yeast or any other product is added.

Description

Granuja means mischievous in Spanish. This strange name is a tribute to Cote's maternal grandfather, Teofilo Reyes, who was the godfather of the Ribera wines, but who was also a joker. This Granuja is a blend of Tempranillo grapes from 5 different terroirs: two in Ribera del Duero (Gumiel and Baños de Valdearrados), Toro, Cigales and Valtiendas. The result is a surprising synergy between these 5 terroirs and the ultimate expression of what tempranillo can give you in Castille-Leon. A perfect tribute indeed for Teófilo !

Description

The most outstanding of Cote's creations. This Cote Luna is a blend od three varietals which are rarely found side to side in the region or even any region of Spain: Aragonés, Petit Verdot and Grenache. What's more, they are 115 and 70 year-old, prephylloxeric vines. And what a result! This wine is better then a great many Riberas...
