Most of the wine produced here is consumed on the island, only a small part is exported.
If the Romans already made wines here in the Antiquity, the two DO's on the island are very young (1999 for Plà i Llevant, 1991 for Binissalem).
The Plà i Llevant vineyards are located in the central and oriental part of Mallorca, on plain soils rich in limestone. Although the Mediterranean climate here is perfect for viticulture, there are only 300ha of vines, mainly red local varieties like mantonegro, callet and fogoneu, but also tempranillo, monastrell and cabernet sauvignon. On the white side, premsal blanc and macabeu dominate.
