Ruberte

Description Ruberte

The perfect example of a family estate, with a lot of different parcels of family-owned old vines. Only part of the wines made here are bottled on the estate, most of the grapes and part of the wines being sold in bulk to other wineries. The flagship of the estate's wines is the Ermita de San Lorenzo blend.

Description Ruberte

History Ruberte

Andrés Ruberte founded the estate in 1948 after finishing his enology studies in Barcelona. In the following years, two other local wineries joined the structure, forming the Grupo Ruberte. The range of products has been enlarged to cavas and liquors, but Ruberte is one of the few wineries in the region which has kept artisanal methods in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Varieties Ruberte

Most of the vines are bush wines - Grenache being the most planted grape in the region. As far as red grapes are concerned, some parcels of planted with Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For the whites, Macabeu is the main grape, with a few parcels of Chardonnay.

Terroir Ruberte

The vineyard here is an extension of the Rioja Baja vineyards, on sandy soils well suited to Grenache. The soils in the village of Magallon are more calcareous. The harvest is sooner here than in other parts of the region and the Grenache is also more aromatic. The climate is Atlantic in the winter, Mediterranean in the summer, and altitude plays a crucial role on the grapes quality - the lower vines laying at 350 meters, the highest at 700. The estate has 14 hectares of land under vines in total.

Vinification Ruberte

Harvesting by hand for the bush vines. The other, machine-harvested vines are not used for the Ermita de San Lorenzo blend. The grapes are macerated and fermented in old 5,000 litre vats or concrete tanks. The joven-type wines are not aged in wood. The others use a large array of French and American oak barrels (300 barrels in total), with only a small percentage of new oak.
