Description Bodegas Artevino (Orben)

History Bodegas Artevino (Orben)

Orben is a new project of the Anton family. Gonzalo Anton comes from the restaurant business (his father has a Michelin starred restaurant in Vitoria, the Zaldiaran), and they organise every year a gastronomy convention where the best chefs of the world invite their best clients. It was not their first wine project: the Anton family also own the Izadi estate, in their native Rioja Alavesa, and Finca Villacreces, in Quintanillo de Onésimo (Ribera del Duero). Their latest projects include the small estate of Vetus, in Toro, and this Orben, a top vineyard on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). In this high altitude area, the Antons selected old Tempranillo vines. The bodega is a modern and spectacular building, dug into the mountainside, almost entirely beneath the soil. The view on the Ebro valley is fabulous. The Antons have great ambitions for this estate. They want to combine tradition and modernity to bottle “the essence of Tempranillo”.

Varieties Bodegas Artevino (Orben)

The main grape is Tempranillo, of course. The estate has 28.5 hectares of this variety, divided between 74 micro-blocks (average size is 0.4 ha). But Orben also has more than one hectare of old Graciano vines. All vines (aged 55 to 65 years) are trained in goblet. The yields are very low. The wines are expected to express all the quality of fruit of the Tempranillo.

Terroir Bodegas Artevino (Orben)

The soils are limestone and clay, very stony. This kind of soils can generate some stress for the vine because they are very poor in organic compounds, which naturally gives lower yields and better quality. The climate is between continental and Mediterranean. The Sierra Cantabria blocks the cold winds coming from the Atlantic. Summers are hot, winters cold. Average rainfall is around 500 litres per year.

Vinification Bodegas Artevino (Orben)

Cold maceration. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Then malolactic fermentation in barrels. Ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months approximately.

Description

Limited and original project from the Anton family. Orben's wines are limited and distinct in the range anyway, but this Chocolate is another story in its own right. Sourced from a number of small vineyards totalling 0.8 ha at an altitude of 520 m, located between Laguardia and Villabuena de Alava. Very poor terroir with sandy soils and little water. 3 vintages are always blended into 1 wine, This nr3 is a coupage of 2020, 2021 and 2022.
