This joint venture between Vega Sicilia and Benjamin de Rothschild (owner of Lafite Rothschild) started in 2004 in Samaniego, in the Rioja.
2009 was the first vintage they produced.
Macán means tons of efforts, patience and know-how with constant improvements. Today, the project encompasses 98 hectares of vines, spread between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
2016 was the first vintage produced in the brand-new cellar specially built for Macán.
Vinification
A careful selection of grapes from the oldest vineyards - often terraces with poor limestone and silt soils.
Harvesting by hand, fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The level of extraction is carefully monitored, and more generally, everything here is done with the utmost precision.
16 months of ageing, half in French oak barrels, half in a 400 litre foudre.
Storage potential
With its round and juicy tannins, this wine will keep well until 2031. And 4 or 5 years more if it is lodged in large formats.
To serve
16-18°C in a large Bordeaux glass. Best decant before serving.
Trial analysis
This wine still has the dark colour of a young wine. On the nose, it hangs between elegance and strength, with a hint of wood underneath.
Its silky, juicy and very well integrated tannins give this wine a certain roundness.
A modern style Rioja with a lot of red fruit, juicy and well balanced.
