D.O. Ribera del Guadiana

Created in 1999, this is the only DO in Estremadura - a remote, rural region mainly famous for the Ibérico hams. But it also has some 20,000 ha under vines, mainly in the Tierra de Barros, in the centre of the area.

The DO owes its name to its largest river, the Guadiana.

Historically, its grapes were principally used to make brandy de Jerez.

This is a very diversified DO, with red grapes as well as white grapes.

The main white varietals are pardina, cayetana and macabeu. The main red grape is tempranillo.

The altitude varies from 200 to 900 metres, so there are many different micro-climates and terroirs.

This DO has a real potential, if only because of its excellent price-quality relation.
