The style of its wine is mainly influenced by the huge quantity of sunshine it gets - its red monastrells are usually very ripe and rich in alcohol, and constitute good everyday wines. An old tradition the doble pasta, which enriches the wines, is still in use.
Most of the grape producers sell them for bulk wines - the DO has 1,900 grape producers but only 40 wines producers- but the vest monastrells are to be found in bottled wines.
Many foreign companies invested in the region, and planted international grapes like syrah ou cabernet.
Monastrell is still the number one grape, before Garnacha tintorera. One also finds a small production of white wines based on pedro ximénez, malvasia, merseguera and some international varieties.
Some smaller and more recent estates are reviving the old higher-altitude vineyards planted with un-grafted local varieties.
The main advantage of these higher parcels being that the cooler climate allows one to produce less "solar", coller and finer wines.
This evolution is to be found almost everywhere in the Spanish wine regions, by the way.
