D.O. Alicante

This is another D.O. with a rich viticultural history. It is said that Louis XIV of France always had a sip of Alicante with his dessert.

Since then, the region has become a mass tourism destination - the Costa Blanca - and produces less and less wine, although it has a great potential. Especially in the hinterland, where Monastrell reigns supreme. Monastrell is the Spanish version of the French Mourvèdre - a typically Mediterranean grape.

The hinterland of Alicante, otherwise known as "Ribera de Vinalopó", is higher in altitude, so its climate is both Mediterranean and continental, which suits the Monastrell quite well.

Whereas the coastline, or "La Marina", mainly produces Moscatel wines.

More than 14,000 hectares of Monastrell are planted in the D.O., which represents 80% of the total surface of this grape in the whole world.
