Vega Sicilia Futures 2025

Introduction:

How does it work? You pay for your futures in January, and they are already delivered to you in April!
You only pay a few months in advance, not 2 years like with regular futures.
2015 is an absolutely top vintage for Unico. And that is no coincidence.
In early September, I tasted the new vintages on the estate with the entire Vega Sicilia team. This 2015 is extremely important for the estate: it was the first Unico fully crafted by the new winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga. My comments after tasting the new vintages were highly appreciated by the owner, Pablo Alvarez. I tasted it and knew it was great… And how! This Unico 2015 is an extraordinarily concentrated Ribera that has everything to stand among the absolute greats. If your child or grandchild was born in 2015, you’re in luck!! 😉

The prestigious cuvée has always been made the same way; the ageing process has never changed: the wien cannot be sold before it is 10 years old. The grapes of Unico come from older vines (average: 35 years) and the cuvée is only made in the best vintages.

The same story with a different ending for the Valbuena 2020. An outstanding vintage, but this time with plenty of finesse and elegance. The pandemic year 2020 finally brought sufficient rain, resulting in a Valbuena with exceptional balance. Honestly, my favorite of the entire series. And moreover, it’s the most enjoyable to drink now and over the next 10 years.

The best of the entire lot, with the most potential, complexity, and always that extra bit of magic, is for me the Reserva Especial. This is a blend of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 vintages. This 2025 release is truly magical! I couldn’t stop smelling my glass, even 20 minutes after it was empty. An experience in itself!
Since last week, the wines have also been scored by R.Parker. And what scores! Unico 2015: one of the highest ever for a newly released Unico: 97/100!
“The 2015 Único comes from a year with a fast ripening, and they had to harvest early to keep the crunchiness of the fruit. This was the first harvest produced 100% by winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga. The aging was five years in oak, one and a half years in barrels and three and a half years in oak vats. It's a big year, produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's ripe, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.8 grams of acidity. The grapes are cooled down for one day, the bunches are selected and then fermented with a pi

Since last year, Vega Sicilia has been fully certified as an organic wine estate (although their vineyards have been cultivated organically for over 10 years). For an estate of this size, it’s no small feat! Additionally, in 2024 they built a state-of-the-art composting facility, crafted to perfection.
